1- Why would I want my child to learn how to play chess?
Chess is an excellent exercise for the mind. It can strengthen the following skills (and more):
– Logical thinking and planning
– Stamina
– Visual memory

2. Do I need to know how to play chess to study with you?
You can be a complete beginner. We will teach you the basics (e.g., what the pieces are called and how they move, chess notation) and much more. If you have played chess in the past, this is also an ideal place for you.

3. Will we need to invest in something for chess?
Nothing at all or maybe a little if you choose to do so. There are websites (lichess.org) where you can set up an account completely free of charge. There, you can learn the basics, play games against others at your level, and much more.
You may want to buy a chess set but there are some that are reasonably priced and you may possibly obtain one from The Gift of Chess.

4. Will chess take away from my child’s time spent studying?
It should not take away much time from studying and, chess can actually help your child become a better student. Chess can help with planning skills, memory, and stamina which are useful skills for students.

5. Are these lessons taught on-line or in person?
Currently, we are only teaching classes online.

6. Can you help my child with his/her math homework?
Yes, we offer math homework help for up to half an hour per week for elementary school children.

7. Can you help my child with his/her reading?
Right now, we are only focusing on chess and math.

8. Can I speak with my child’s tutor in Spanish?
Yes, parents can speak with their child’s instructor in Spanish or English.

9. How much time will the tutor spend with my child between chess and lessons?
Lessons usually run 30 minutes maximum and would be once a week or once every two weeks.

10. When are lessons offered?
They are offered after school (in the afternoon).

11. What if my child only wants help with school subjects and is not so interested in chess?
We can help with math homework if that is what the child needs. However, we think learning chess is a good way to become a better student and would encourage the child learns both.

12. How much does this cost?
There is no established cost. However, we suggest a donation be made to the not-for-profit, Gift of Chess.
